Heuer founded back in 1860 in Switzerland and started making timers and dashboard chronographs for use in automobiles and aircraft. As far back as 1882 Edouard Heuer patented his first chronograph and introduced the first Heuer wrist chronograph in 1911. Tag Heuer, as we now know them, formed in 1985 when the TAG Group bought a majority stake in Heuer. The Carrera model line dates back to 1963 when the first model was introduced to pay homage to the Carrera Panamericana Mexican road racing series of the early 1950s. The Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 is a beautiful 41mm chronograph with a deep black dial and racing red chrono and sub-dial hands, making for a desirable modern classic look.
Geoff's comment: Tag Heuer is often the first luxury watch people buy. It certainly was for myself (I think mine was a Tag Heuer 1000 Professional from around 1988).
