First launched at BaselWorld 2015, the release of the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time 5524 notably introduced a new sports watch into the Patek Philippe collection.  Patek Philippe launching a new pilot's watch in 2015 came as a surprise to the watch world - after all, Patek has very little history in making pilot's watches (other than a few short-run pieces in the 1930s).  Its release was somewhat polarising - people either loved it or hated it.  Fast forward to today and the 5524G Pilot Travel Time is arguably the most popular model in the Calatrava range and the only one that sells close to its list price in the secondary market.  Somewhat unusual for a pilot's watch was the fact that Patek Philippe only released it in white gold.  This is unusual for a pilot’s watch, which are more often found in steel.  It certainly raised a few eyebrows at the time, but Patek Philippe does not make many steel watches. At least not outside of the Nautilus and Aquanaut ranges.  The success of the Pilot Travel Time is now undeniable and embodied in the fact that Patek went on to also release a rose gold version (5524R) and also in a smaller case size (7234) in 2018.
