Panerai was founded way back in 1860 as a Swiss watch shop in Florence, Italy.  In the 1930s that they started to make watches, and at that time they were actually made by Rolex for Panerai and used to supply the Royal Italian Navy.  It wasn't until 1993 that Panerai started selling watches to the general public.  Things ramped up when they became part of the Richemont Group in 1997 and production moved to Switzerland.  Since then they have made some really beautiful watches and their own in-house movements.

Geoff's comment: Officine Panerai has a long association with the sea, harking back to the days it supplied the Royal Italian Navy with its über masculine Radiomir divers watches in the 1930s. The Luminor Regatta Chrono Flyback 47mm (PAM00652) features some ingenious functions which make it a must have for any team member vying for yacht racing glory. However, do you really need a yacht to justify the purchase of this gorgeous watch?  I think not.
